What is the reason for ITV?

Editorial

When you actually sit down and look at the current mess ITV is in no one should be surprised.  Terrible sports coverage, remember the fiasco over a last minute goal being missed recently for a commercial break, during a Formula 1 race the end of the race again was missed for another break.

Look at the programming, how can a network rely so heavily on the success of American Idol, Pop Idol, X-Factor and other reality show's at the detriment of the stuff ITV had built up its reputation over years, good factual programme's like World in Action, and the Southbank show.

What about Minder, The Sweeney?  Now we have sub-standard reality shows like that rubbish Stars on Ice.

What has happened at ITV and the reliance on Corrie and the other soaps to carry a whole commercial business was inevitable.  It should close down all of its stations like ITV2, ITV3 etc and concentrate on building up a new model.

The recession will hit even harder the "traditional media" with Sir Martin Sorrell CEO of WPP saying that revenues in the first half will be flat.  So how does ITV move forward, its share price is rock bottom, staff cuts and units are being shut, what else needs to happen?

A foreign buyer like the Greek ANT group or Al Jazeera is being mooted as potential buyers for ITV, but will a new owner really want to spend millions on niche programmes?  A new buyer will want money making shows like the reality programmes, and less production demanding shows.

The future for ITV is bleak, there is too much choice today, and there is not enough reason to view ITV.
