Westminster Council is bucking the trend in London at time of austerity and public sector cuts, with news that it will be investing £180,000 over three years in a "gang information desk" which will be collating messages sent by suspected gang members via Facebook and Twitter and other networking sites.

The Times in a report said "a private council document said that Westminster Council wanted to spot confrontations and pass on 'up to date intelligence".

Westminster Council is scheduled to meet with Twitter and Facebook to go over the proposals, with Big Brother Watch already expressing their concerns that private data and communications will be accessed "without court approval".

Blackberry messengers which are encrypted were used during the Tottenham riots, which are difficult for authorities to intercept and were alleged to have been used by gang members to communicate during disturbances.
