Travellers to London during the Olympic Games are today learning of the industrial strife that is engulfing London, with renewed threats by the RMT the tube union to reject a pay deal for its members during the summer games.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said:

“The RMT is rejecting this latest Olympics and Paralympics pay offer from LUL and we will be meeting with the company again to press our case for a flat rate, across the board payment which recognises the contribution of all staff throughout the high pressure extended Olympics and Paralympics period and which is free from a whole barrage of strings and caveats."

The RMT which has described the latest offer from TfL as "slightly improved" is made up of £100 depending on meeting ‘Customer Satisfaction Survey’ targets and £20 per shift worked during the 4 weeks of the Games only.

RMT has rejected the offer because it does not address most of the union’s reasons for rejecting the earlier offer, and remains unacceptable on a number of key grounds:

∙ The money offered is not an adequate reward for our members.

∙ The £100 will not be paid unless unspecified and arbitrary targets are met.

∙ The £20 per shift amounts to only around £400, with those who have leave or sickness (except caused by assault) receiving less or nothing.∙ There is no reward for the increased workload taken on by staff.

∙ Unlike offers from other companies, this offer does not reward staff for work during the run-up to the Games or the period between the Olympics and the Paralympics.

The Transport Commissioner for London Peter Hendy said:

"There is plenty of time to get a deal, No we aren't being held to ransom, this is just negotiating, they just make a lot of noise about it."
