London Conservative activists who are gearing up for the longest build up to a general election in living memory, are deeply concerned at the unrest over the Tory party's failure to clearly promise a referendum over the Lisbon Treaty, and the damage UKIP may make in marginal seats to the Conservative vote. One leading Tory activist said to the London Daily News on UKIP’s threat to the Tory vote “UKIP scare the hell out of me”.
UKIP according to a report in The Observer is planning on fielding candidates in strategic seats, which could cost the Tories between fifty and sixty seats. The survey of "supermariginal" seats which are those held by Labour with less than a 2,000 majority could remain Labour if the "Conservative inclined vote" went UKIP.
Nigel Farage the leader of UKIP has been quoted as actively seeking disaffected Tory MPs to stand as candidates who will support a referendum on Europe.
