Turkish gang shooting convictions

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that two Turkish men have been found guitly of a shooting incident in Hackney on 14 April this year.

[B] Sina Naroei, 24 [14.07.86] of the N1 area was convicted of:
= Possession of a firearm
= Possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life

A second man [C] Ozgur Ozdemir, 22 [09.03.88] of the E5 area pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to:
= Possession of a firearm
= Possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life

Both men will be sentenced on 3 December.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Neil Whitbread from Trident, said: "This was a reckless act played out between two rivals (Naroei and Ozdemir) in a busy Hackney street.

"Shots were fired by both parties with no thought to the risk they posed to innocent members of the public, who unbelievably were not injured.

"Operation Trident is committed to taking men of violence off the streets. Working with the community, we will continue to work tirelessly in order to bring the perpetrators of such crimes to justice."

An investigation was launched by Trident following shots fired in Kingsland Road on Wednesday, 14 April 2010.

Police were called at approximately 22.00hrs to reports of shots fired in Kingsland Road, near the junction with Middleton Road E8.

Two men on a motorcycle [Ozdemir was a pillion passenger carrying a handgun] passed Naroei who was with a group of males in the street. Ozdemir and the rider returned moments later and Naroei fired shots at the pair causing the bike to topple over.

Ozdemir ran to nearby shops and retaliated by returning shots towards Naroei.

As a result of the incident, a 21-year-old man [A] received a gunshot wound to his leg. He attended a north London hospital where he received treatment before being discharged on Thursday, 15 April.

[A] was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and taken into custody at an east London police station. He was subsequently NFAd.

On 20 April officers arrested a 23-year-old man [B]. He was later charged and dealt with as above.

On 22 April, officers arrested a 22-year-old man [C]. He was later charged and dealt with as above.

On 3 August 2024 a fourth man [D] was arrested in connection with the investigation. He remains on police bail pending further enquiries.

+ The guns used to carry out the offence (a pistol and a handgun) were subsequently recovered by police.
