There are reports that several tourists have broken their legs after a lift accident on Tower Bridge.

Ten people were trapped inside the north tower after a cable snapped and the lift plunged this afternoon - at 1.15 the London Ambulance Service were called.

Six people needed medical treatment as a result of the incident, three of whom were taken to hospital. They are thought to have sustained any serious injuries, though Sky News is saying that some have broken their legs.

The bridge has been closed - the iconic bridge is currently undergoing a three-year restoration programme of painting and stone cleaning.

A LAS spokeswoman said:

"We were called at just before 1.10pm to reports of an incident at Tower Bridge.

We sent two single responders in cars, three ambulance crews and the hazardous area response team.

We understand there are six patients being treated by our crews, all of whom are conscious.

Three of the patients have already been taken to the Royal London Hospital."
