Conservative leader David Cameron has moved to quash any suggestions that new Mayor Boris Johnson will be a party puppet.
There was concern that being the highest ranking Tory in office, party officials would try to 'control' and 'micro manage' the charismatic politician. Opponents accused them of doing just that during the election. It's his mayoralty
Speaking with the Metro, Cameron said Johnson would pick his own advisers and while they "will make recommendations" it: "..is his mayoralty, his decisions, his appointments." There is a perceived fear amongst party officials that if Johnson struggles in London it will severely hurt prospects nationally. Boris said at a BBC debate that he "would work for London" and if that meant upsetting his party leader - so be it. "The metropolis turns away from New Labour" is how the Evening Standard's executive editor described Ken Livingstone's defeat - voters have given the Tories a chance and despite Cameron's statement he will be keeping a close eye on Mayor Johnson.
