The Conservative Party were last night preparing Baroness Warsi to appear on  BBC Question Time and face the leader of the British National Party Nick Griffin, in what has been described as a potentially explosive encounter.  Baroness Warsi is the the only Muslim female on the Conservative front bench with responsibility for Community Cohesion and Social Action.

Senior Tories are aware of how adept Griffin is in speaking to the public and will be working with Warsi to try and promote "cohesion in the community" and the importance of tolerance.

Warsi speaking at a fundraising dinner for her Chief of Staff Eric Ollenshaw in Enfield last night,  to a group of Turkish Conservatives, underlined her commitment to promote Turkey's entry into the European Union and said:

"The way we deal with Turkey will be instrumental in how we deal with Islam in Europe; the Turks have been Europeans for many centuries. Under a Conservative government the support for Turkey to join the EU will continue".

The BNP have been quite vocal in their opposition to Turkey's entry into the EU with a campaign flyer during the May European elections saying:

“Taxpayers money shouldn’t be wasted on expanding Europe so that millions of Muslims in Turkey can join the invasion of foreign job snatchers”.

Another leaflet by the BNP said:

"To oppose the dangerous drive backed by the other main parties to give 80m low-wage Muslim Turks the right to swamp Britain”.

The decision to allow the BNP leader Nick Griffin on Question Times was attacked by Peter Hain the Welsh Secretary and branded the decision as not "lawfully constituted". The BNP is facing a barrage of attacks, on one side a new leaked list of members of the BNP has already surfaced on the internet today showing 11,560 members, and on the other side Britain’s leading military figures accusing the BNP of "hijacking the good name of Britain's military".

BBC Question will be broadcast on BBC1 on Thursday at 10pm
