Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the new Tesla Model 3 before a crowd of potential buyers, Tesla owners and members of the press. The event took place in Los Angeles, California, in the SpaceX headquarters. Britons can expect the first deliveries in 2017.

Tesla Mode 3 is a very anticipated mass-market, low-priced car. The starting price for UK customers is believed to be closer to £35k. The electric car will have as main rivals brands like BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-class, and Audi A-4.

The Tesla Model 3 will offer an autonomy of approximately 346 kilometers. It is based on an all-electric powertrain and advanced lithium ion batteries. Speed is not an inconvenience for this electric vehicle, as it will blast from 0 to 100 km/hour in 6 seconds.

Model 3 is part of a “master plan” that Musk talked about in 2006. It is the third step, after the Tesla Roadster and Tesla Model S, towards showing the world that electric vehicles can be a viable option. The Tesla Model 3 wants to be a mass-market car that can be purchased at an affordable price.

Model 3 has a similar design to Model S, but it is more compact than the previous version. It offers two boots, and no grille, that support aerodynamics. The interior has a simple design, with a horizontal touchscreen that includes climate controls, gear, speed, stereo controls and map display.

The rear window extends over the front seats, creating an illusion of an almost all-glass-roof. The base price of the Model 3 was established for US$35,000 (approximately £24,500) with the Autopilot system hardware and Supercharger included.

Musk declared that Tesla can currently build 500,000 cars per year in its plant located in Fremont, California. Parts for the vehicles are being produced in Tesla’s new Gigafactory (that it is still under construction) in the Nevada desert.

Hours before the car was revealed, several would-be buyers went to Tesla dealership to secure an order. For this, they needed to put down a refundable deposit of £700. After the car was presented to the world 135,000 people made a deposit in less than two hours.

The low emission and eco-friendly Tesla cars seem to be an option even for London cabs. The CEO Amer Hasan of the taxi booking service Minicabit announced that by 2020, a quarter of the fleet will be represented by low emission vehicles. The first step towards this goal was the introduction of several zero-emission Teslas Model S.

Britons who plan to purchase a Tesla Model 3 need to know that there are several destination charging and superchargers across the United Kingdom in London, Manchester, Warrington, Northampton, Birmingham, and so on.
