Take a walk around Battersea
Article Video Photos

By John 'the cabby' Kennedy

Well here we are at Battersea Square SW 11 a very trendy little bollard infested square which just happens to be a absolute delight of a place to sit outside with a drink in hand and appreciate this middle class oasis mixed with working class urban social housing(council estates to you and me ).

Now if you happen to head towards the junction of Battersea Church road turn right into Westbridge Road, notice the period property on your right hand side but look at the wooden pavement bollard's, honestly what a waste of a tree ! Has we walk further down Westbridge road we will go past a bus stop and a public house, you will also notice the council housing estates on both sides of the road, but has we near the junction of Battersea Bridge Road you notice the beautiful trees on both the left and right hand sides but also note the lovely Victorian houses on the left.

Boring Battersea Bridge

Now has we cross this busy road into Parkgate road take a good look to your left and you'll see Battersea Bridge very bland but very tidy. In my opinion this is probably London's most boring river crossing, maybe a different set of lamps on the Bridge would liven it up ! My idea would be over sized colourful lamp shades these would certainly wake up the pale matt green colour of the bridge.

Anyway back to the walk Parkgate road is just that, a road that leads to a gate to Battersea park so off we must go. Notice the Nursing home on the right hand side called Meadbank and a Texaco Petrol station on your left, now stop when you reach the end of the foot path and look down Elcho street and you will notice the rear of a amazing block of modern apartments, in fact from the rear you would think the Alien's have landed.

Continue to walk up Parkgate Road and we will come to a fine restaurant called Ransome's Dock and next door the Butcher and Grill, on the right hand side you'll see the Ethelburga estate and again the view in front is a beautiful tree canopy and the entrance to Battersea Park via Albert Gate.

Now get yourself to the corner where you will find the Prince Albert Public House and turn left into Albert Bridge Road, just get ready to be amazed. Now if there is a big group of you and you happen to be thinking of crossing the bridge please remember to break step ! ( You'll notice the sign on the bridge. ) However I want you to walk up Albert Bridge Road towards the bridge but turn left by the beautiful glass apartments into Anhalt Road and left again and just admire a very lovely Victorian terraced tree lined Road.

When you've reached the end of Anhalt Road turn left then cross the busy road and enjoy a stroll in the park, personally I would recommend heading towards the Peace Pagoda, taking in the views of the Thames and Chelsea Embankment. Now remember if you've packed a lunch and a bottle of tap water from home a "talk the walk" will have cost you nothing !

"Talk the Walk" can be heard on the Big George Show on bbc London 94.9 fm every Wednesday between 2.00 and 3.00 am and shortly available on a pod cast at www.freelondonevents.co.uk/talkthewalk
