Student protests likely this week, Met prepares for more demonstrations

The Metropolitan Police has contacted up to 20 academic institutions to "pass on intelligence" on possible student protests that are planned in London on Wednesday, and at the of the month, in protest at the scrapping of the EMA (education maintenance allowance).


Intelligence gathered from the Met Police has indicated finance departments maybe targeted at universities, with student protest groups adopting a "new vigour" in their demonstrations against the coalition governments plans.

Direction action protests are also believed to be planned to occupy civic centres in London and town halls.

Large trade unions like the GMB and Unite have pledged their support to large scale protests in London and Manchester on 29 January.

Several London train stations will experience "teach-outs" according to a report The Guardian, where demonstrators will discuss a wide range of issues including train fares hikes the economic policy of the coalition and student fees.
