The London Daily News visits 20 newsagents outside of central London, not one distributed the "freesheet" Evening Standard

News Desk

The London Daily News on the first day of the Evening Standard's decision to go free visited over 20 newsagents outside of the centre of London, and discovered that not one would be distributing the Evening Standard, breaking a decade’s long tradition.

The decision by the Evening Standard to go free may boost the papers circulation but the ABC1 readers who were the bread and butter readers of the paper and paid 50p a day to buy the paper, are bewildered by the decision to remove the paper from newsagents and go free. Solomon Greenburg from Cockfosters said to the London Daily News:

"I always without fail bought the Standard; I knew Bob at the newsagents I would always go in at lunch at get a copy.  Now not only have we lost the Standard overnight, but we have also lost link we had we the newsagents who depended on us to buy other goods when in the shop.  It’s a stupid decision to go free when you were generating cash from the cover price."

The move by the Evening Standard to go free, a move meant to fill a void left by thelondonpaper News International freesheet, in an environment of falling advertising spend is high risk.  With a reported loss in £12million from the cover price sales the Evening Standard has to generate an extra £600,000 a week in advertising to cover the extra print costs and loss in revenues when going free.

The London Daily News remains of the opinion that Evening Standard in its heyday in the mid-1990s was the pre-eminent newspaper in the United Kingdom with the West End Final regularly setting the agenda for the next days national newspapers front pages.
