Residents in the north London suburb of Southgate woke up to see a BMW X3 parked inside a high road sweet shop, in what police initially suspected could have been a failed "smash and grab" but was later discovered to have been "driver error".

The incident which took place during the busy school run on Friday at 8:30am saw the driver of the BMW X3 apparently lose control of the high powered SUV,drive at speed into the sweet shop.

One amused Southgate resident Andreas Michael  said:

"If we are witnessing a smash and grab of a sweetshop then we are truly in trouble.  What is the world coming too".

Another trader Mustafa Asif who runs grocers nearby said:

"The driver must feel like a real plonker, smashing into the sweet shop during rush hour".

The Met Police station in Southgate located just 10 metres away sent officers to cordon off the "crime scene".
