News Desk David Burrowes MP for Enfield and Southgate in a speech to the House of Commons underlined his commitment to prevent the spreading of the "super bug" or clostridium difficile (C diff) from hospitals in his constituency and in London generally. The government has confirmed that there have been over the last 12 weeks a total of 2,645 cases - 97% in acute wards of C diff. The number of death certificates mentioning MRSA had been rising steadily since the early nineties, but action to better clean hospitals started to reverse the trend to 1,593 deaths in England and Wales in 2007. This decreased further to 1,230 in 2008, a fall of 23%. The Office for National Statistics says most of the deaths were in older age groups.
A Palmers Green resident and clean hospitals campaigner Graziella Kontkowski was praised in Parliament last week for her work to eradicate the super bug clostridium difficile (C diff) from hospitals. Her local MP David Burrowes led a debate on C diff after he was the first MP to raise the subject in 2007. The debate focussed on the progress made in the last 3 years and the need to prevent the spread of the infection in the community setting. David highlighted the information leaflet prepared by Mrs Kontkowski in partnership with the Department for Health and the work of her C diff support group.
David said " I was pleased to raise the important subject of C diff in the House of Commons. Since the time I first raised the subject 3 years ago there has been good progress. It was good to give deserved praise to Graziella Kontkowski for her tireless efforts to eradicate the horrible infection C diff. The purpose of the debate was to highlight the challenges of preventing the spread of C diff in the community. The minister responded positively and is committed to ensuring that more information and good practice is passed on to fulfill the Health Secretary's commitment to eradicate preventable infections."
