ZERO 7 have been crafting exquisite ambient beats and downtempo pop for the last decade, so fans will be delighted to discover their new underground project, due to go live next month.
Ahead of Zero 7’s fourth studio album, Grammy-nominated producers, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker, have taken an unprecedented step with the ‘Kling EP’, the first record the duo have created without the Zero 7 moniker.
Kling is a far more underground proposition than their past releases, all erratic glitches, mesmerising chords and crystalline embellishments, touched with more fuzz and distortion than they’ve dared use before.
‘Interruptions’ proves an apt name for an opening track that stutters and starts amidst rousing Eastern elements.
The stand-out 9 minute epic ‘sYMbAL’ melds spine-stroking tribal beats with vocal distortion redolent of The Knife and Fever Ray, as synthesised atmospherics and rhythmic lyrical refrains characterise ‘Methods’, completing the EP’s final track.
Joining Binns and Hardaker on Kling’s collaborative effort are Robin Mullarkey on bass, Eddie Stevens on keyboards and Tom Skinner on drums, all of whom having been playing with Zero 7 for many years.
The Kling collective emerged following Henry, Sam, Rob, Eddie and Tom’s mini European tour in 2008 as Ingrid Eto (the Zero 7 Instrumental Project) after which they went into the studio and recorded what has since metamorphosed into the EP.
Zero 7’s forthcoming album 'Yeah Ghost' is released by Atlantic Records on September 7th 2009.
The new 12" Vinyl EP will be released on July 13th on Solar.
