As the second day of snowfall continues in London for the Fall/Winter 2010 season, the question may start to arise of how to keep warm rugging up with inevitable layers of clothing and still remaining relatively fashion savvy. As winds howl against the windows and sleet is forecast for the coming weekend, the temptation exists to walk out of the house looking somewhat akin to a grizzly bear or an oversized penguin and even walking as such.
Mere mortals look at pictures of an immaculate Victoria Beckham taking her sons ice skating with not a hat matted hair in sight and figure hugging thin clothing and wonder why in the name of pure new wool, cashmere and raw silk is she not blue? Does she have access to a special thermal fabric not yet released to the public? After all NASA’s technology is a good twenty years ahead of the retail market. The high street stores this year may have begun to let us in on this secret with the release of a number of modern takes on the thermal undergarments our mothers told us to wear that were really only suitable for no one’s eyes bar our own.
Some City workplaces are allowing people to dress down with a view to putting safety first, but let’s not let safety replace the better –than-chocolate high of putting on a new 100 percent raw silk dress over our woollen tights and being surprisingly warm. The question of whether to Puffa (coat) or not to Puffa remains undecided , however some new patterns beyond the usual horizontal or rhomboid stitching have emerged this season onto the High streets, complete with figure enhancing belts to bring in the puff at the waist.
