London politics is poorer today, with the sad news that Sir Simon Milton Mayor Johnson chief of staff has died at the age of 49.

The loss will be a big blow to Mayor Johnson who appointed Sir Simon Milton to add "stability" to an otherwise erratic mayorality at City Hall, by
the Conservative  mayor .

Mayor Boris Johnson said:

“In Simon Milton London has lost a brilliant public servant and one of the nicest and cleverest men in politics". He added: “It is hard to think of anyone in politics who commanded such universal respect from people of all parties.”

Commenting of the death of Sir Simon Milton, Deputy Mayor for Policy and Planning and Chief of Staff, Chair of the Assembly Dee Doocey AM said:

"Sir Simon Milton was a dedicated public servant in both elected office at Westminster City Council and as the Mayor's senior adviser at City Hall. In his dealings with both colleagues and political opponents he was decent, reasoned and concerned to achieve the best output for London. He will be sorely missed by colleagues across the political spectrum both at City Hall and throughout London.  The London Assembly
sends its sympathy to his family and friends."

Sir Simon Milton was leader of Westminster council and a long-serving and widely respected London politician and a former chairman of the Local Government Association, and has been described by the Financial Times as bringing "a critical understanding of the machinery of government" that Mayor Johnson lacked at the start of his term.

After being diagnosed with leukaemia in 1990, Sir Simon had a bone-marrow transplant eight years later but caught pneumonia while recovering which damaged his lungs. He died at the London Clinic on Monday after a short illness.

The London Daily News would like to give its condolences and sympathies to the family of Sir Simon Milton.
