A 15-year-old boy may be charged for raising a placard that called Scientology a "cult." Crown Prosecution Services are deciding whether to prosecute the teen under the Public Order Act. He apparently protested outside the groups Blackfriars headquarters with a board saying: "Sciencetolagy is not a religion, it is a dangerous cult." City of London Police
City of London Police received a complaint over the use of words like “Scientology kills" and "cult". Chief Supt Rob Bastable said: "... we have to balance...the right of all sections of community not to be alarmed, harassed or distressed as a result of other people's behaviour." Mounting a defence
The teen, writing on his website, appealed for help in mounting a defence: "I need precedents, legal advice, definitions and defences. I intend to make a big folder with all the defence you can give me, and in case this does get through to court, I will be well prepared." Group wooing the police?
Information obtained under the Freedom of Information act last year revealed how the Church of Scientology appeared to be involved in an attempt to woo City of London Police. More than 20 officers, from constables to chief superintendents, were invited to a series of engagements, like the premier of Mission Impossible 3, by the scientologists in the run up to the group’s headquarters opening in the heart of the district.
