The Greek Orthodox cathedral of All Saints in Camden celebrated its name day with an open service headed by Bishop Athanasios attended by hundreds of local residents and Orthodox Christians.
All Saints Cathedral a Grade I listed building recently received a grant by the English Heritage of £114,000 to restore the external aspects of the cathedral with plans now to work internally, to maintain the unique neo-classical features of the building.
Father Vassilis a British born cleric serving at All Saints said:
"We have plans to repair the cathedral and fund the creation of a hall, our efforts will maintain and build the Greek Orthodox following in Camden and central London generally".
The All Saints Cathedral was originally Anglican and had first been known as the Camden Chapel, having been built in 1824 as part of Lord Camden's development area. The architects were William Inwood and his son, Henry, who had recently completed the nearby St. Pancras New Church. In both cases, they drew on Classical Greek architecture for their inspiration. In the case of All Saints, the inspiration for the tower had been Lysicrates' monument in Plaka in Athens (known from the 17th century as Diogenes' Lantern).
