In 2009 in a capital city with so many various faiths and belief's living on the whole in harmony, to have schools that either select on faith or are influenced by faith is somewhat of an anachronism.
Surely if parents want to educate their children to be good Jews, Muslims or Christians, then this should be done in private at home and at weekends. Why should the state fund or support faith schools? We should at school have one faith and that is to live to together in peace.
The actions of extremists again are tarnishing the name of Islam in the UK with a campaign of some vitriol, (if the reports are to be believed) at the New Monument School in Surrey. Why should one religion play more of a role than an other?
The Governors of any school have one main responsibility and that is to make the school the best institution for learning, and not for the indoctrination of religion.
The Government cannot play a fair role because it has compromised the traditional ethos that we had in the UK of our schools facilitating learning and the encouragement of academia, with concessions to religious groups.
Parents are the issue here, if you want your child to be a good Muslim etc, then do this at home, and do not expect the state to pay for this.
