Physicist and Mathematician

Robert (Bob) William Gilbey  was born on the 9th December 1948 to William and Renee Gilbey in Clapham, where he remained until about 1991 after the death of both his parents. He then moved to Southgate where he remained until his death earlier in December this year.

Bob obtained a first class honours degree in physics and mathematics from the University of Sussex after which he joined Hawker Siddeley Dynamics at Hatfield and then joined the Engineering Sciences Data Unit (ESDU) as an aerodynamicist, where he remained until his death.

In his youth he was an active and highly competent chess player and up until his death still followed chess activities through articles and on-line. He was also very well read and extremely knowledgeable in history, politics and economics. Although socially reserved, Bob was universally very popular. He took a little getting used to, but he had a great sense of humour and, when required, a razor sharp tongue. His observational skills were quite unique. He was a very self-contained and private individual who didn't like large gatherings or crowds, nor did he like or want to travel. He disliked birthday celebrations, particularly his own, and generally avoided all other Festivities. He was avid cricket and football supporter holding season tickets for both Middlesex and Surrey grounds.

In the many years since his colleagues have known him, there is not a single instance of Bob becoming visibly angry and certainly no occasion where he raised his voice to anyone.

Bob will be sadly missed by all his friends and colleagues.
