British Transport Police have released shocking images of three youths throwing a wheelchair ramp and a bin onto a 750 volt railway line.

One almost electrocuted himself and another caused an explosion on the track at Addlestone station. Cops said it was extraordinary that they were not killed or injured. The high voltage actually melted the ramp.

Station deserted

The vandals struck just after 1am and returned for more mayhem at 2am, footage shows one youth showered with sparks as he hurls an object on the track - the station was deserted. Although no trains were running through the station the current is live 24 hours a day.

With schools still out for the holidays, police are responding to daily reports of youngsters damaging and obstructing live rails.

Officers 'horrified'

BTP Schools Liaison Officer Graham Cottington, who spends his days going into schools and warning youngsters of the dangers of trespassing and obstructing the tracks, said he was horrified when he watched the CCTV footage. He said:

"Some of those reports included children running in front of trains playing chicken, and objects used to obstruct and damage trains and trams such as wheels, metal poles traffic cones and pieces of concrete."

He added it was a stark reminder to parents about the type of dangerous activities that young people become involved in.
