News Desk There is no chance of reconciliation between the CWU and the Royal Mail and today postal workers will be balloted across the UK for a national strike that will cripple the mail service to homes across the country. London is to bear the brunt of the battle between the CWU and the Royal Mail with 6 million items in the post in London.
Small businesses are being particularly hit hard with cheques from client's delayed in the post, credit card bills being received late prompting fears people will be penalised from lenders for not paying bills on time. "Contingency plans" are in place so that businesses and individuals can collect cheques or important documents from local sorting offices.
The CWU and Royal Mail were in no mood for "peace talks" with the unions describing the "unbearable pressure" put on Royal Mail staff and the Royal Mail equally insistent that reforms to "Spanish practices" had to be done for the greater good of the mail service.
In a statement to the London Daily News the Royal Mail said:
“The CWU leadership is well aware that it has already agreed all the changes Royal Mail is making and we urge them to recognise the tough economic conditions faced by all our customers and Royal Mail itself and to live up to their claims to support modernisation and to focus - as the company is doing- on delivering the postal service on which so many customers depend.”
London is expected to be hardest in the UK with the Royal Mail accepting that "mail delayed by strikes so far has been less than a quarter of the daily mailbag and has been almost entirely concentrated in London."
"The position today is that around 9 millions items of mail are delayed - compared with the average daily mailbag of 75 million - with almost 6 million of those in London."
The problem is also affecting political party conferences passes which are being sent in the post this week. Organisers of the conferences are aware of the delays and are warning activists and the media to make provisions for late deliveries. photo credit: London Daily News
