How much are these couple of weeks of sport going to cost us? The budget has tripled since London won the bid. Construction, security, VAT and legacy plans seem to be in perpetual 'pass the buck' chaos.
Former mayor Ken Livingstone pledged that Londoners would pay no more than 38p a week in council tax for the Olympics - but who would be surprised if we start hearding politicans tell us that 'the situation on the ground, unforseen circumstances force us to....' Nowhere to run to
Even if our 2012 contribuntion from council tax stays the same, the games are also being underwritten from central government who wouldn't think twice about how to go about getting that money back from us. When London bid for the games and we gave it our support we did so on the priviso of a bugdet of £3.3bn. How in three short years this has almost tripled to £9.3bn is a national scandel. Perfect storm
Every week we hear how the cost of some element of the games, the media centre, the velodrome, aquatic centre, the Oylmpic village and the latest, the main stadium - has risen by millions. A Mayor getting to grips with the problem, a Treasury feeling the pinch and a city looking on with dismay as costs rise with apparently no one taking responsability, is creating the perfect storm. We are four years away from the games and the doubling and tripling of budgets is happening NOW - how much more can we take?
