A Metropolitan Police officer who made "inappropriate" remarks on a website about the G20 protests has quit the force.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Tim Godwin revealed the resignation during a Metropolitan Police Authority meeting grilling the force's board of governors over the incidents in early April.

Protesters held a large banner saying: "Remember Ian Tomlinson" and jeered Mayor Boris Johnson as he entered City Hall.

Godwin said:

"It is the responsibility of all police officers to use reasonable and proportionate force and all police officers have to account for that use.

"This was the biggest security operation mounted by the Met for many years. But the vast majority of officers acted professionally and at times with great courage to facilitate lawful protest and to allow G20 to go ahead."

"Rubbish!"

When Johnson defended the force, a protester shouted "rubbish!"

Mr Johnson said:

"Everybody in London and in the country has of course been horrified by some of the images of what happened, in particular to Ian Tomlinson.

"But I hope members will agree that it is clear that the overwhelming majority of police officers in London today and indeed at the G20 are doing a fantastic job."

"Bash long haired hippys"

The officer is not believed to be Enfield Pc Rob Ward, 27, who is claimed to have said on his Facebook status update:

"Can't wait to bash some long haired hippys up @ the G20."

The post is alleged to have been made just an hour after the death of newspaper vendor Ian Tomlinson, 47, who was shoved to the ground by another police officer at the protests in the City on 1 April.

IPCC investigations

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating over 80 allegations of excessive force during the violent demonstration on April 1 and 2.

Another 50 plus are about police tactics and more than 40 were general complaints from TV viewers.

A police constable seen in a video shoving Tomlinson to the ground has been questioned under caution on suspicion of manslaughter and suspended.

A sergeant who obscured his ID badge number has also been suspended after being caught slapping and striking a woman at a solidarity march for Ian Tomlinson.

The Police Federation says IPCC chairman Nick Hardwick, is acting like a "witchfinder general".
