The "nightmare" scenario Tories facing

In a recent local council by-election in north London Labour not only beat the Conservatives but sent a chilling message that Labour may cling onto power in a general election.

Conservative activists in Enfield were horrified when a by-election in the Jubilee Ward saw Labour gain over 50 per cent of the vote with the local paper Enfield Gazette saying:

"Ms Simbodyal inspired a whole new generation of Labour supporters to come out and help with her campaign using a Barack Obama-style viral campaign on Facebook. She said her priorities as a councilor were to keep the streets clean, safe and green with policies such as tackling fly-tipping and installing alley gates, and to get the council to invest in facilities for young people."

Labour gained 1,346 votes, almost 300 more than Conservative candidate Ricky Deller, who scored 1,049.

The internet is "unknown" entity in election campaigns in the UK with younger voters more likely to vote if they are approached via online campaigns.

What is now being said by many secretly is that Labour may just manage to cling onto power if at the forthcoming G20 Gordon Brown performs well and as The Guardian poll indicates today "wavering Tory and Liberal Democrat voters that he has started to reverse the recession in time for an election next year".

"We not only lost in the Jubilee by-election but we were out maneuvered by a young girl who used her Facebook page to attract voters," a senior Conservative activist speaking to the London Daily News.

There is a complacency at the heart of the Conservative machine which should alarm the leadership, that a win is "given" and by doing nothing and allowing Labour to unravel is the best solution to win a general election.  Labour will fight hard and will use all the latest campaigning techniques to keep office.

The Tories need to learn the lessons of recent campaigning techniques and begin to ramp up the momentum to oust this useless lot in office.
