A pensioner murdered by an armed raider in an east London shop this week was contemplating moving home to Sri Lanka.

The 66-year-old man suffered a heart attack after being stabbed by the thief and died at the scene. He and his wife came to London only months earlier to be with his family.

Shop co owner, Mr Jenanachandren, speaking to the Evening Standard, described how Mr Jayasundarakumar found life in London:

"He didn't like life over here so much. He missed the climate and colour of Sri Lanka, where he had land and space rather than all this greyness and rain."

The raid

The victim was helping out his friend whose sons own the shop when a masked man burst in the Jena off licence on Horns Road, Ilford. The raider demanded money and brandished the knife when Mr Jenanachandren apparently panicked, waving his hands.

The robber put the blade to the mans throat then allegedly stabbed him in the stomach.
Police arrested a 21-year-old man this morning in Woodford in connection with the fatal attack.
