Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes of the Association of Police Officers has "advised" a Home Affairs Committee in Parliament that two and a half million security personnel would be required for the 2012 Olympic Games in the capital.

The figures of two and a half million would be made up of "officers and private security guards".

The Olympic Delivery Authority in September issued a statement about contractor G4S Security, creating jobs in security for local residents near to the venues for the games.

In a report published today by the cross party House of Commons Home Affairs Committee that by 2012 40% per of firearms officers in the Metropolitan Police would be eligible for retirement.

The Parliamentary committee which looked at "policing in the 21st century" on the issue of security at the 2012 games p.56 in its conclusions said:

"Insufficient progress has been made in bringing forward a plan to secure the London Olympic Games, which are now only four years away.  We are concerned at the potential implications both for security during the event and for planning by individual forces who will be involved in delivery."

The committee recommended that the Home Office should "take urgent steps to ensure that planning security or the Games is properly coordinated across police forces and other authorities".

Mayor Johnson acknowledged to the Parliamentary committee that:
"I do think it is vital that we establish very soon what the security architecture is going to be for the Games"

Mayor Johnson concluded on the issue of security for the 2012 games and planning by saying that:

"I am afraid that not enough work has been done on this so far".
