A major fire in Mill Hill involving gas cylinders believed to have started at around 4am this morning has led to many thousands of commuters and residents being evacuated by the London Fire Brigade. The London Fire Brigade said:
"Eight fire engines and around 40 firefighters are tackling a fire in a scrap yard which is directly under the M1, between junctions two and three. The fire is close to Ellesmere Avenue in Mill Hill, NW7. A number of gas cylinders are involved and a temporary hazard zone has been set up as gas cylinders can explode when exposed to heat."
The M1 has been closed in both directions between junctions one and four. Train lines close to the area have also been closed. Station Manager, Dave Bird, who is at the scene said: "The scrap yard is close to a residential area so a number of people have been evacuated from nearby houses as a precaution. We're obviously aware this is causing some disruption so our crews are working really hard to bring the flames under control." It's not known at this stage how many people have been evacuated. It's not thought anyone has been injured.
The Brigade was called at 0411. Firefighters from Wembley, Harrow and surrounding fire stations are at the scene. It is too soon to say what caused the blaze
The Highways Agency said:
"The M1 is closed in both directions (northbound and southbound), between junctions 1 and 4, due to a vehicle fire. The motorway is expected to re-open by 12:00hrs on 16/04/11.
A diversion route is in place. Traffic wishing to join the the M1 northbound at Staples Corner is advised to follow the Black Diamond diversion symbol. Traffic on the M1 southbound is advised to follow the Black Circle diversion symbol.
