Michael Bloomberg the Mayor of New York and billionaire media mogul will be in London today to meet with the new Mayor of London Boris Johnson, to discuss the demands of running a world class city. Mayor Johnson will greet Michael Bloomberg to City Hall, where a press conference will take place before embarking on their scheduled talks. They are expected to focus on crime and discuss how London can learn lessons from strategies adopted in New York for tackling law and order issues. Mayor Bloomberg was credited with cutting crime in New York by 20% during his initial term in office. Mayor Johnson has already pledged to reduce crime levels in the capital and cut youth violence. During his campaign he promised to recruit 440 new police community support officers to patrol the Tube and train network funded by cuts in the Transport for London publicity budget. He also aims to introduce airport-style hand-held scanners and knife arches at rail stations. Earlier this week he announced an alcohol ban on public transport in London to improve safety and curb anti-social behaviour. The two men are also expected to discuss transport, skills and working in partnership. London has been the preferred location for companies bypassing New York in the financial world leading to companies like the Mexican silver mining company Fresnillo to list in London joining the FTSE 100 following the £4 billion float. The FT reported that the "Fresnillo float will also be the first main London listing by a Mexican company. Jaime Lomelin, Fresnillo chief executive, said London had been chosen over a listing in New York for several reasons. "The big mining houses and the best mining analysts are in London and London is a more international market," he said. Fresnillo will be the world's largest primary producer of silver, although some diversified mining groups produce more silver as a byproduct of other metals. As well as the Fresnillo silver mine, the world's largest, it owns two gold mines in Mexico.
