Mayor Boris Johnson has approved plans by Tottenham Hotspur football club to redevelop their current White Hart Lane stadium.

It puts to bed Spurs bid to move to the Olympic Stadium and all but guarantees West Ham's new Stratford residency.

Johnson could have overturned last month's decision by Haringey Council to grant planning permission for the 56,000-seater stadium.

Writing to the council he said: "I am content to allow Haringey Council to determine the case itself, subject to any action that the Secretary of State may take, and do not therefore wish to direct refusal or to take over the application for my own determination."

But Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and non-executive director Sir Keith Mills confirm the north London club are still keeping their options open.

Unless the government invervene, the £450m Northumberland Development Project will go ahead.

However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and non-executive director Sir Keith Mills confirm the north London club are still keeping their options open - the bid with American live concert promoters AEG, which runs the O2 Arena was allegedly put together at the last minute. Earlier this month the two Premiership sides were named as the preferred bidders for the 2012 stadium.
