By John Kaponi The Falklands are British, despite the protestations by the Argentines. The majority of the population of the islands located in the South Atlantic Ocean and just 250 nautical miles from the coast of mainland South America remain sovereign British territory.
Its therefore appalling and not even worth considering what the consequences would be for the standing of the United Kingdom to either not put up a fight if the Argentines were to mount an attack on the Falklands, or if recent reports are to be believed, that the United States are now pushing for negotiations over sovereignty, and would no longer support the British claim to the Falklands. How utterly despicable it is of the United States to shift allegiance to the Argentines, when the UK was the first ally in Iraq, Afghanistan to send significant troops.
We lose the Falklands, we lose our standing as a credible military power, and then we move into becoming a mediocre European nation alongside the Spanish, Portuguese and dare I say it the Italians. We will no longer be able to protect our own sovereignty, looking for assistance from the French on the seas, given the recent Ministry of Defence Strategic Defence and Security Review, will mean British armed forces no longer having an effective “carrier strike” capability – a working aircraft carrier equipped with fighter jets – until 2020.
British armed forces fought hard to keep to the Falklands British; the importance of these islands to the United Kingdom cannot be underestimated. We lose our geo-political standing in the world, if we budge an itch on the issue of the Falklands, the UK may even have to justify her seat on the UN Security Council, and her part in NATO by losing the Falklands. We lose a lot as a nation. Does everyone remember the handing back of Hong Kong to the Chinese? Was that not a humiliation?
How much more can this nation take until it gets to the "Greece scenario" were people just say they have had enough of capitulation, surrender and failure by its political ruling class? Its time we drew a line and said that the Falkland’s remain British until such times as the people on the island want to remain part of the United Kingdom, its not therefore up to the Argentines to dictate British foreign policy.
