We lose the Falklands and we are heading for mediocrity

Falkland Islands 180611.JPG

By John Kaponi

The Falklands are British, despite the protestations by the Argentines. The majority of the population of the islands located in the South Atlantic Ocean and just 250 nautical miles from the coast of mainland South America remain sovereign British territory.

Its therefore appalling and not even worth considering what the consequences would be for the standing of the United Kingdom to either not put up a fight if the Argentines were to mount an attack on the Falklands, or if recent reports are to be believed, that the United States are now pushing for negotiations over sovereignty, and would no longer support the British claim to the Falklands.  How utterly despicable it is of the United States to shift allegiance to the Argentines, when the UK was the first ally in Iraq, Afghanistan to send significant troops.

We lose the Falklands, we lose our standing as a credible military power, and then we move into becoming a mediocre European nation alongside the Spanish, Portuguese and dare I say it the Italians.  We will no longer be able to protect our own sovereignty, looking for assistance from the French on the seas, given the recent Ministry of Defence Strategic Defence and Security Review,  will mean British armed forces no longer having an effective “carrier strike” capability – a working aircraft carrier equipped with fighter jets – until 2020.

British armed forces fought hard to keep to the Falklands British; the importance of these islands to the United Kingdom cannot be underestimated.  We lose our geo-political standing in the world, if we budge an itch on the issue of the Falklands, the UK may even have to justify her seat on the UN Security Council, and her part in NATO by losing the Falklands.  We lose a lot as a nation.  Does everyone remember the handing back of Hong Kong to the Chinese?  Was that not a humiliation?

How much more can this nation take until it gets to the "Greece scenario" were people just say they have had enough of capitulation, surrender and failure by its political ruling class?  Its time we drew a line and said that the Falkland’s remain British until such times as the people on the island want to remain part of the United Kingdom, its not therefore up to the Argentines to dictate British foreign policy.

The Falkland Islands were named by a British Captain in 1690 and formally claimed in 1765. Long before Argentina was a twinkle in a revolutionary's eye. Argentina spuriously claims that we stole the islands from them which is both a perversion of historical fact and legal reality. They have tried to take the islands by force on two occassions, 1833 and 1982. On both occassions a naval force sent from Britain threw the Argentines off again. When Argentina joined the United Nations it signed the Charter which gives all people the right of self determination. That applies to the people of the Falklamnd Islands too. As long as they wish to remain British it is their right to do so. There is nothing to discuss. There is no issue over sovereignty.

Roger you are an ignorant. UK leave the islands in 1774 because spain claims over both islands, in that time spain had the oriental islands, uk leave the occidental island and pain took control over it since 1774 till 1811. spain leave the islands in that time because napoleon invaded spain. that invasion from napoleon to spain made argentina realized that argentina was helpless if someone invaded argentina, then argentina expelled their viceroy and in 1816 argentina was independent. argentina claim the islands in 1820 and there were no british french or spanish in there because they left that place british in 1774 and spanish in 1811. then argentina gets effective control of the islands in 1823 with a governor Luis Vernet and another people argentinians. UK invaded the islands in 1833 expelling the argentinians who were living in there and uk put their own british in there.. you are a terrible ignorant saying that argentina invaded in 1833 when the UK was the one who invaded in that time and it was recognized in the UN so take a book of history at least that the british books were made by that monarchy that you call government. the french spanish and argentinians version are the same but hte british version is different. not that weird? of course not the UK lie all the time why wouldnt do the same now? Learn something ignorant
