Security services in London are on a heightened state of alert with a security scare this morning closing main thoroughfares of the West End.

Reports confirmed by the Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a disturbed manhole cover caused an alert which resulted in the closure of The Mall and Carlton House Terrace.

The Police have confirmed that the incident was "routine" and "ongoing" and the roads remained closed.

A bag found by the security services near to Northumberland Avenue was been closed in a controlled explosion. The roads have now reopened.

The BBC reported that "eight vehicles from the ambulance service, including a command and control unit, were parked on the Mall although only two were ambulances."

The Police are believed to still be manning blockades with police dogs present ahead of the first visit by the US President Barack Obama, since US Seals assassination of Al Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan.

Intelligence from the US has pointed to an active group in London going by the name of the 'London Boys' who were taught guerilla and non-conventional warfare methods by a top Al-Qaeda explosives expert in Afghanistan.
