City News Desk London petrol station forecourts are on tender hooks this evening with news that supplies of petrol could be affected from the announcement that a refinery in Coryton Essex has been closed by its owner Petroplus.
The Coryton refinery supplies around 10pc of the UK's fuel, processing 220,000 barrels of crude a day, and is particularly used to supply forecourts in London and the South East.
The Daily Telegraph in report quotes a Department of Energy and Climate Change spokesman who said the government was "confident" that there would be no disruption to petrol stations.
"The refinery remains operational," he said. "We understand that a process is underway to put in place the necessary commercial arrangements to deliver product into the market.
"Companies have already made alternative arrangements to ensure adequate supply of products are available while these commercial arrangements are being put in place."
BP already stated that it has enough supplies to last for several weeks according to various reports, and is looking at resolving the issue of supply without disruption to its forecourts.
