London girl Keothavong historic win in US Open

Our best female tennis player and London based Anna Keothavong has won a historic match in the US Open in Flushing Meadow to grab a place in the last 16.  Anna Keothavong beat Anna Schiavone the world number 27 in 3 sets winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

"I've never played her before but it will be great to play an Olympic gold medalist so I'm going to go out there and give it everything again and we'll see what happens."

Anna Keothavong who is ranked 87th in the world her win in the second round of the US Open ranks as her best victory to date. Keothavong a Middlesex player training at the Hazelwood Tennis club in north London has been pushing for a place in the top 50 in the world for some time.

The win for Keothavong is a big lift for the women’s game in Britain which has suffered in comparison to rival European nations.

Her next oppenent is the tough Russian number six seed Elena Dementieva
