Residents opposed to a 50% increase in flights from London City Airport are taking Newham Council to court. They argue the new flights will increase noise and pollution. Newham Council has declined to comment. Friends of the Earth are representing the Fight the Fights group after the borough allowed the number of flights to soar from 80,000 to 120,000 a year. Friends of the Earth, said they believe the council has acted illegally by failing to carry out proper consultations on how the ruling effects government policy on tackling climate change. Fight the Flights chairman Anne-Marie Griffin said: "We have worked tirelessly for the past three years to stop the expansion of this airport, which already causes so much disturbance and pollution. "This hearing will allow those who were not consulted, and those who were not listened to by Newham Council, a chance of justice." The hearing will last two days.
