Air pollution caused by Olympic traffic during the 2012 London will breach EU air quality standards that will result in the UK being fined up to £300 million by European authorities, warns an assessment by the Olympic Delivery Authority.

London roads during the Olympic Games will see up to 60 miles dedicated to transporting Olympic officials and athletes to and from events, with projections already claiming that "heavy congestion" will be created for other road users.

Londoners are being warned that the air quality during the Olympic Games could potentially lead to higher levels of PM10s the air particles that cause heart attacks, and strokes and linked to the cause of death of more than 4,000 people in London each year.

In a report commissioned by the Olympic Delivery Authority on the "strategic environment assessment" non-Olympic traffic straying into "Olympic lanes" will face fines of £200, with Transport for London already requesting employers to tell staff to work from home during the Games.

Athens in 2004 became a virtual ghost town with many Athenians leaving the city for the islands to allow Olympic traffic to move around the city which has suffered from smog and air quality problems.
