The MP for Leyton and Wanstead Harry Cohen is to leave Parliament citing "intolerable stress" at the next general election following the investigation into his expenses by the Parliamentary Commissioner.
Cohen is believed to have claimed thousands of pounds for "redecorating his designated second home” before selling it and charging the taxpayers £12,000 in stamp duty and fees on a new property.
The Telegraph reported that Cohen:
"Redecorated the kitchen at his new house and after submitting to the Commons authorities that it was a necessary expense was reimbursed for the cost of the £3,000 granite work surface."
Cohen claimed for:
- £5,232 for furniture, bedding and decoration - £1,222 new blinds - £500 repainting from of house - £11,250 stamp duty and legal fees - £3,031 granite surfaces in kitchen
