Editorial A London Daily News survey in March found that sex for sale in London has exploded with a 50% increase in women offering sexual services, in comparison to figures two years ago, pushing the price down of sex from £75 to £50. This trend is one manifestation of the "out-of control" nature of sexual services in the capital and a drastic new approach is required. Appalling to many as it maybe to know that women are still selling themselves for money, the true extent of the "oldest trade in town" is yet to be fully realised.
The influx of young women from other European Union member states to London has seen the cynical exploitation by their own compatriots of women who have come to our city to improve their own standard of living but have failed to find meaningful employment. Via Polish newspapers in London small adverts for women are printed looking for "pretty women who can dance", a totally misleading job description. With rent, debts to pay many Polish girls are entering into a life of prostitution because as one working girl told The London Daily News:
"I have no options, my English is little, I have to pay rent, and I need work".
The human trafficking element is no longer the same problem it used to pose, as most of the girls in London are EU citizens, the problem is now the exploitation of these women in a sub-culture that works in a parallel universe to mainstream life.
It is now time the government seriously looked at regulating and legalising sexual services in London, so that the women who work are protected under the law, the Treasury can levy a tax and earn valuable cash, and also eliminate the pimps and middle-men. The "black-economy" which has been working and making money for years needs its wings clipped and the government need to make some brave decisions; legalise brothels in London and lets clean up this area of our society.
