A man was found guilty for fundraising in order to commit terrorism. At the Central Criminal Court Shabaaz Hussain was jailed for a total of five years and three months imprisonment after admitting to seven counts of terrorist fundraising. Hussain received nine months imprisonment on each count to run consecutively. He also received a 15 year notification order.
Hussain, 28 (23.09.83) of Jamaica Street, E1 transferred the money, totaling £10,000, between April 2010 and September 2010.
He transferred money on seven separate occasions to associates who were based in Somalia.
Officers from the MPS Counter Terrorism Command arrested Hussain on 21 June 2024 as part of a pre-planned intelligence led operation.
On searching Hussain's flat, officers discovered extremist material in the form of documents, DVDs and discs, almost in every room. In Hussain's bedroom they found six money transfer receipts, three were found under a pillow. Officers also discovered multiple mobile phones showing contact with Somali numbers and text messages giving instructions to transfer money using coded words.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Osborne, Senior National Coordinator Counter Terrorism, said: "Today's sentence reflects the seriousness of the matters that were brought before the court.
"This man provided money to his associates in Somalia who he believed were engaged in terrorist activity."
"This was a complex investigation that exposed Shabaaz Hussain's co-ordination of a terrorist fundraising network, which ultimately led to his conviction."
Hussain was also charged with four counts of engaging in conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism, contrary to section 5(1)(a) and (b) of the Terrorism Act 2006. The Judge ordered the four counts to remain on file.
He was charged on 26 June and appeared in custody at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on 27 June 2011.
256 days served on remand will be taken away from the total sentence.
On 27 January 2025 he pleaded guilty to seven counts of fundraising for the purpose of terrorism contrary to section 15 (3) (a) and (b) of the Terrorism Act 2000 at Woolwich Crown Court.
