Iran, and the onset of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East

It is now beyond doubt that Iran has the ability to enrich uranium.

The US and Israel have a nightmare scenario being played out without much both nations can do.

To attack Iran and eliminate the nuclear facility in Natanz central Iran would infuriate the Shi-ite, and most probably the Sunni Muslims globally. London, Washington, Paris and Berlin would be targeted by sleeper terrorist cells in the most outrageous way.

But what must be done to avoid greater problems?

The COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN RELATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE published a report February of this year outlining the big risk of Iran going nuclear. The potential that super rich Saudi Arabia loses faith in the US securing its interest in the region; Egypt and Turkey feeling that they will be seen as inferior in the geo-politics of the Mid-East.

With the price of crude at over $100 US dollars the Saudi's are rumoured to have "acquired knowledge" from Pakistan to have the potential to have a functioning nuclear weapons capability in a very short period of time.

The report of the US Senate said:

"The development of a Saudi nuclear weapon represents one of

the most serious and most likely consequences of an Iranian acquisition

of nuclear weapons. If Iran obtains a nuclear weapon, it will

place tremendous pressure on Saudi Arabia to follow suit. The only factor that

would likely dissuade the Saudis from pursuing a nuclear weapon would

be a restored United States-Saudi bilateral relationship and a repaired Saudi perception

regarding the reliability of the U.S. security guarantee.

If the United States does not take deliberate actions in the coming years to achieve

both of these objectives, an Iranian bomb will almost certainly lead to a Saudi bomb."

The prospect of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and even Syria all having nuclear weapons is one that is keeping policy strategists, military analysts and politicians awake at night. The people of the cities of London, New York, Paris and beyond will be the one's who will be exposed to a renewed threat to peace by the actions of belligerant leaders in the middle east.
