Journalists at the Independent are set to walkout this Friday in protest of continuing cutbacks. The loss making Canary Warf paper is trying to save around £10m by axing 150 jobs - 30 have already accepted voluntary redundancy. There are also misgivings over the proposed move to Kensington in April. National Union of Journalist members voted 64% for industrial action. They plan to hold a mandatory union meeting from 5pm to 7pm - right in the middle of peak production time. NUJ's 'Cutback crisis'
The NUJ is currently campaigning against cuts and pay freezes in the media and are organising protests and the lobbying of parliament and councils. Speaking to The Docklands, NUJ head of publishing Barry Fitzpatrick said: "We are today serving notice on the company of the chapel's intention to hold a mandatory meeting next Friday. "At the same time, we are extending a further invitation to management to discuss ways to avoid compulsory redundancies."
