Editorial With over a billion Muslims in the world and much of the global oil located in the middle east, and the sovereign funds of the large Arab states bailing out US banks (many owned by American Jews) the Arabs have not lifted a finger to stop the onslaught in Gaza.
Hamas has not won many allies in the Arab world amongst its various despotic regimes, with Egypt and Saudi Arabia notably not making any calls for a respite in the Israeli attacks on the Palestinians. Ironically Turkey has been a leading advocate for a ceasefire and has said she will open dialogue with Hamas, despite Turkeys military and political links to Israel. Many of the international Arab media networks have started openly debating how Mahmoud Abbas the leader of the "Palestinian Authority" will be riding Israeli tanks when Hamas is defeated. But for those who are not involved in the conflict either by religion or ethnicity it is surreal for the number of civilians and the death’s to keep rising with no one in the world either able or willing to demand Israel to stop the invasion and agree a ceasefire.
The American right, which lets not forget went into Iraq to find WMD's and is leaving licking its wounds after sustained losses both militarily and economically, has been fully behind Israel’s actions.
Let’s just stop and think for a second.
The Jewish lobby in America and the UK is of course strong and very organised and invariably wins the "ears" of the leaders of the powerful states. But we cannot allow human atrocities to continue, which provoke the very extremists that Israel is fighting to become even more determined and entrenched.
Why is Israel using helicopters and fighter jets on civilian areas when in 2006 during the attacks of Lebanon the UN condemned this, with the UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour saying the UN had "grave concern over the continued killing and maiming of civilians in Lebanon, and the occupied Palestinian territory". She suggested that the actions of Israel may constitute war crimes. Arbour called for Israel to obey the "principle of proportionality" and said, "Indiscriminate shelling of cities constitutes a foreseeable and unacceptable targeting of civilians.…Similarly, the bombardment of sites with alleged military significance, but resulting invariably in the killing of innocent civilians, is unjustifiable."
What is the exit strategy for Israel? What is success? The total annihilation of the Arabs in Palestine? And what happens when the well educated young men of the IDF from middle class Jewish families are taken hostage?
Israel is preparing for a prolonged invasion to last several weeks until the White House makes the call and demands for a halt. Until this happens the IDF will be bombarding the West Bank and Gaza, and the impotent "Arab lobby" will be watching the scenes on television able to do nothing.
