Just when it seemed Heathrow's Terminal 5 had turned a corner, it goes and sinks! The £4.3bn building is being hit by subsidence only 15 months after its chaotic opening. The state-of-the-art terminal is being affected by it's clay foundation which is "swelling" and causing the movement which is expected to continue for decades. Owner opted for 'cheaper foundation'
There have been reports that owner BAA had opted for a cheaper foundation during construction. A spokesman for the Spanish owned firm said the building's movement was "perfectly normal." Tiles have reportedly had to be repaired on the south side of the terminal and experts have been called in to assess the situation.
