Travel Desk The RMT has confirmed that workers at Heathrow Express will strike following what the trade unions claims to be "management’s disproportionate action and sheer intransigence".
A wave of industrial action is to take place in support of a sacked driver Zahid Majid who, despite a series of meetings, Heathrow Express have refused to reinstate. As a result of the management’s disproportionate action and sheer intransigence all DRIVER members at Heathrow Express will take industrial action as follows:
The strikes: · To take 24 hours of strike action by not booking on for any turns of duty between the hours of 12:15 Sunday 26th February 2012 and 12:14 hours on Monday 27th February.
· To undertake action short of strike by not working any additional hours between the hours of 03:00 on Saturday 3rd March 2012 and 02:59 on Monday 5th March.
· To take 24 hours of strike action by not booking on for any turns of duty between the hours of 12:15 on Sunday 11th March 2012 and 12:14 on Monday 12th March 2012.
A separate industrial action ballot in support of our Heathrow Express Branch Secretary and Representative, Liaqat Ali over his suspension from duty on spurious allegations about his trade union activities returned an 85% vote for action.
Although Heathrow Express has now returned Liaqat from suspension, and all allegations have been found to be completely unfounded and potentially malicious, the company have now taken the deliberately provocative step of pursuing possible disciplinary charges against Liaqat on issues of conduct and confidentiality whilst he was suspended.
ALL RMT members at Heathrow Express will take industrial action as follows:
· To take 24 hours of strike action by not booking on for any turns of duty between the hours of 12:15 Sunday 26th February 2012 and 12:14 hours on Monday 27th February.
RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said;
“Instead of using the period between the ballot result and the announcement of industrial action to negotiate a settlement, Heathrow Express have instead opted to ratchet up their attacks in an act of blatant provocation.
“The unfair and disproportionate punishment taken by management in both these cases is a total miscarriage of justice and that is reflected in the overwhelming ballot results for action. Management’s behaviour clearly demonstrates their willingness to victimise staff and union representatives at the slightest provocation and no doubt they see this as payback for the successful building of a strong and militant union organisation within the company."
