William Hague the Shadow Foreign Secretary spoke to leading members of the capital's Greek community, to underline the Conservative party's commitment to see a "just, peaceful, bi-communal settlement in Cyprus" and to praise the strong links of the Greek community with the Conservative party.
Speaking at an event organised by the "Conservative friends of Cyprus" at the north London head-quarters of the Greek-Cypriot Brotherhood, William Hague emphasised the importance of Turkey joining the European Union, and how it would be of "mutual economic benefit" to Europe and Turkey to see the Turks in the EU, after meeting the pre-conditions laid down by the EU.
"Ankara must give Cypriots the freedom to chose a settlement for themselves", William Hague at the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood.
The event was also a platform for other MP's and parliamentary candidates to show their support for London's 350,000 Greeks, with shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers and MP for Chipping Barnet, shadow Justice Minister David Burrowes MP for Enfield Southgate, Nick De Bois Conservative candidate for Enfield North, Greek-Cypriot candidate for Edmonton Andrew Charalambous, Mike Freer candidate for Finchley Golders Green and Matthew Offord candidate for Hendon North.
It also emerged today that Andrew Charalambous the Conservative candidate for Edmonton spent £142,319 of his own money on campaigning, advertising and printing leaflets in Edmonton, drawing criticism from his own party and opponents.
William Hague gave a speech to the Jewish community earlier today to re-emphasise support for Israel under a Conservative government.
