By News Editor Declan Wilkes An 18-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he and his pal were gunned down outside a memorial service for a stabbing victim. Armed police swarmed over Lower Clapton around 9.30 on Wednesday night when eight shots rang out across the Pembury Estate. The carnage was outside the Snellness Community Centre where family and friends were remembering Shaquille Smith, 14, who was stabbed to death in Hackney in August. Critical condition
The teen is in a critical condition, a Met spokeswoman confirmed that a second 18-year-old was shot and is in a stable condition. No arrests have yet been made. Police are urging anyone with information to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Information can be given anonymously. Two year gang feud may have led to killing
While it's believed Shaquille was an innocent victim of youth thuggery - friends from his area, E9, have been locked in a fierce 'postcode war' with gangs from London Fields, known as 'The Field Boys.' His death may have been sparked from a brawl at the Notting Hill Carnival two years ago between a younger lad from London Fields and an older boy from E9. Shaquille's murder occurred less than half a mile away from the tower block where 16-year-old Ahmed Benyermak fell to his death after fleeing a gang of youths on bikes. Accused all from Dalston Hackney area - trial soon
Five Dalston Hackney teens will stand trial over Shaquille's murder. Godiowe Dufeal, 19, of Well Street, South Hackney, George Amponsah, 18, of Greenwood Road, and two youths aged 17 and a 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons are charged with murder. Dufeal and the three unnamed defendants all denied murder. Amponsah and a 16-year-old defendant, who did not appear in court, did not enter pleas. A provisional trial date has been set for April 27 next year, a preliminary hearing is set for February 27.
