Hackney MP claims white people “love playing divide and rule"

Diane Abbot the Labour MP for Hackney North and Stock Newington has provoked a storm on Twitter by claiming in a tweet that white people "love playing divide and rule".

BBC Five live then ran a phone in on the issues, with attempts by the BBC to find Abbot to confirm what she meant with the comments, not materialising with the Hackney MP speaking on air.

Tweets include Thomas Ball @tommy_ball "breaking transfer window news: Liverpool sign Diane Abbot on free transfer", kingsley eweka "John Terry should be fired first before any one starts criticising Diane Abbot and she right saying what others can't!"

Diane Abbot MP said:

"I understand the cultural point you are making. But you are playing into a "divide and rule" agenda".

Responding to comments made by Miss Adewunmi Diane Abbot MP said:
"White people love playing 'divide and rule. We should not play the game".

Calls have already been made for Diane Abbot to be sacked from her position as shadow public health minister.
