Greenpeace have closed over 40 service stations in the capital, in protest at BP's failure to address the environment damage of the oil spill in Louisiana United States, with banners displaying "closed: moving beyond petroleum".

According to Greenpeace activists fuel supplies at over 50 service stations in the centre of London have been closed, causing fuel supplies to be turned off by flipping safety switches located on the forecourts and then removing them to prevent the petrol stations reopening. Greenpeace activists hoisted signs saying: "Closed. Moving beyond petroleum".

Greenpeace executive director John Sauven said: "The moment has come for BP to move beyond oil. Under Tony Hayward the company went backwards, squeezing the last drops of oil from places like the Gulf of Mexico, the tar sands of Canada and even the fragile Arctic wilderness.
