The Greek Tennis Association of London (GTA) launches today in the city capitalising on the renewed interest of tennis by the 300,000 Greek population. The GTA which is located at the Bourneside Lawn Tennis club in Soutghate north London, aims to nurture Greek Londoner's talent for tennis and assist in the LTA's quest to find future tennis champion's to represent Great Britain. John Kaponi the GTA's chairman commenting on the launch said "it is a very exciting project, the GTA is located within the heart of the Greek community in London, and has the advantage of having its own base and tennis club." The history of Greek's in tennis dates back to Takis Theodoracopoulos the Spectator columnist, who played Davis Cup tennis for Greece, to Pete Sampras the former world number 1, Mark Philipousis the Greek Aussie, Marcos Baghdatis the finalist in the Australian Open in 2007 among others. "Tennis is a very 'Greek' sport. We love to compete by ourselves and we like to win", John Kaponi speaking to the London Daily News. The GTA welcomes all players of all backgrounds to join the association that have any heritage or link to Greece via parentage or birth.
